What is Legionnaires disease?
According to the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases:
“Legionnaires’ disease is a type of pneumonia which is caused by the growth of Legionella in building water systems which are not adequately managed.”
Everyone is susceptible to infection from Legionella, but there are those who are at higher risk.
What can you do to prevent infection?
Under the current Safety, Health, and Welfare at Work Act 2005, you must consider the risks of Legionella that may affect you, members of staff and members of the public and take suitable precautions.
As an employer in control of the workplace you must:
1. Recognize and evaluate sources of risk
2. Prepare a Legionella control plan for preventing or controlling the risk of Legionella
3. Implement & manage the scheme
4. Keep records
